Are you eco-friendly?

Do you know what your carbon footprint is, or, in other words, how much you pollute day to day? In order to really know, you would have to measure the amount of CO2 you emit into the atmosphere, the energy you spend (in kWh) and your water consumption (in cubic metres).
We offer something simpler, but just as effective.

IT’S ECO, IT’S LOGICAL

Three major issues show the level of our eco-friendliness, or how much of a carbon footprint we generate and, therefore, whether we emit more CO2 into the atmosphere than we should. Although there are many other elements we can analyse, these three issues refer to our food, our behaviour at home and our use of transportation.

To find out whether you are environmentally-friendly or, conversely, whether you can improve something in your daily habits to pollute less, we invite you to take this simple survey:

1. How often do you usually eat meat products?

  • Every day (1 point),
  • 3 or 4 times a week (2 points)
  • 2 times a week or less (3 points)

2. Do you usually consume fresh seasonal, local or organic products?

  • Whenever I can (3 points)
  • I do it from time to time (2 points)
  • I don't usually (1 point)

3.  Do you separate and recyclewaste?

  • Whenever I can (3 points)
  • I do it from time to time (2 points)
  • I don't usually (1 point)

4. Do you use environ mentally friendly household or cleaning products?

  • Every day (3 points),
  • 3 or 4 times a week (2 points)
  • 2 times a week or less (1 point)

5. How often do you travel long distances to go to your place of work or study?

  • Every day (1 point),
  • 3 or 4 times a week (2 points)
  • 2 times a week or less (3 points)

6. Do you usually use public transport or a carpool?

  • Whenever I can (3 points)
  • I do it from time to time (2 points)
  • I don't usually (1 point)

6-10 points: Large Carbon Footprint L

10-14 points: Normal Carbon Footprint N

14-18 points: Small Carbon Footprint S or a "Minifootprint"

If the result of your survey was 'L' or normal, we suggest a few small gestures to reduce your Carbon Footprint:

• Join the recycling programme and be part of the 75% of Spanish households that separate their waste to deposit it into its dedicated container.

• When you go shopping, opt for bulk products, which require less packaging.

• Save energy and do not waste. An example would be setting the air conditioning to fan, so as to circulate the fresh air and allow you to reduce the power you use, or closing the water tap as you brush your teeth or soap your hair.

• Are you going to change cars? Opt for a sustainable one (hybrid, electric, gas).

• Take note of some green Apps that can help you, such as iRecicle, which answers questions about where to recycle a type of waste; Carbon tracker, to calculate your carbon footprint; "Punto limpio", which tells you the closest recycling point to your location; Green outlet, to save on your electricity bill; or Green Globe, to travel sustainably.

• Environmental education: acquire it through reading up or enrolling in courses and transmit it to your family and friends, since everyone's commitment is necessary.

• Remember that the best waste is the one that is not produced, and that our waste today will be our materials tomorrow.

DID YOU KNOW...

According to the latest Ecoembes report of 2016, each Spaniard deposited 13.2 kg of plastic containers, cans and Tetra Pak in the yellow container, 4% more than in 2015, and left 15.5 kg of paper and cardboard in the blue container, 2.7% more.

These selective collections for packaging and paperboard saved one million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere and more than 20 million cubic metres of water.

As for glass, in Spain we recycle more than 752,000 tonnes in green containers, 4% more than in 2015.

In total, we recycle 76% of packaging and 71% of paper and cardboard.

Each Spaniard generates about 440 kilos of waste in the home, according to a World Bank report.
