Carmen Amoraga (Picanya, Valencia, 1969) is a writer and journalist. With a degree in Information Sciences, she has developed her career between literature and the media. She has received several literary awards, including the Nadal Prize in 2014 for La vida era eso. She was also a finalist for the Planeta Prize in 2010 with El tiempo mientras tanto. La memoria infiel is her latest novel. She currently lives in Picanya, ‘the ground zero of the storm’, from where she recalls with strength and commitment one of the most devastating events experienced in Valencia in recent decades.

Here are her ‘top five’:

PASTA

I have two daughters. The oldest is 17 and the youngest is 12. Pasta is a safe bet for a calm and happy meal, with no complaints, as everyone loves it – it’s delicious in all its varieties and recipes.

HAM

At home, we love ham, with or without bread, with or without breadsticks, with or without tomato. With something or with nothing. A slice of ham can be an appetizer, lunch, snack or even a way to make peace with life.

CHEESE

The same goes for cheese. We’re all big fans at home. I prefer soft and creamy cheeses, but the rest of the family enjoys the aged varieties. So, I either buy a mix of different cheeses or stick to semi-cured ones.

WINE

If there’s cheese and ham, there must be wine.  It pairs with everything, but especially with friends when we gather. And it’s not just for celebrations. When life gets tough, a glass of wine makes it easier to swallow. During the worst nights of the storm – the first ones, with no light, gas, or water — after a full day of clearing mud from dawn to dusk, my husband and I would share a glass of wine with dinner. We’d raise a toast for being alive, for making it through another day.

SEASONAL FRUIT

We’re lucky to live in a place where every season brings the chance to enjoy healthy, delicious fruits. Oranges, tangerines, strawberries, apples, pears, bananas—and a list so long it wouldn’t fit in this section.
