Consum will have 56 supermarkets with CO2 refrigeration facilities by the end of 2017

100% of the cooperative's stores will have LED lighting by July

Consum, a pioneer in the use of CO2 in its cooling systems for its eco-efficient stores, will have 56 supermarkets using this gas to generate industrial cooling by the end of 2017. This environmental commitment means that one in three COinstallations in Spain belongs to Consum. CO2 Is a natural refrigerant gas with an environmental impact 4,000 times lower than conventional gases.

The Cooperative also relies on LED technology for the lighting systems of its supermarkets, with energy savings of 50% over conventional lighting systems. In this first half of the year, Consum will complete the implementation of LED technology in 100% of its supermarkets.

In 2016, the Cooperative reduced CO2 emissions by 3,273 tonnes, equivalent to the planting of 12,000 adult trees. In addition, its carbon footprint decreased by 4.8% over the previous year, mainly due to the incorporation of CO2.

Since the implementation of the Savings and Energy Efficiency Plan in 2007, Consum has eliminated the emission of 36,551 tonnes of CO2, while saving more than 17 million euros. Above all, this is thanks to the implementation of the network of eco-efficient supermarkets which consume 35% less energy than conventional supermarkets.

In addition, 75% of the cooperative's energy consumption comes from renewable sources. The cooperative also recovers 95% of all waste generated.
