6 things you use ‘wrong’ without realising
Habit and unawareness mean we don’t utilise all the possibilities that some everyday objects offer us. The packaging, design and shape all serve the function, and are designed to make it easier to access the contents or carry out the task. But do we know how to make the most of this design? 1. POURING MILK WITHOUT SPILLING
Do you spill the milk or juice every morning at breakfast? This is a very common problem which has a simple explanation. You’re not using the carton properly. The correct way to pour is to hold the carton with the opening at the top. That is, in the part furthest away from the glass or mug. Yes, the opposite to what seems logical. This way, you let air into the carton and you avoid the contents splashing out and spilling.
2. POURING MILK WITHOUT SPILLING
Packaging designers think of everything possible so that consumers enjoy their product to the fullest and at the same time so they can adapt to increasing demands. Did you know that the shape of drink can ring pulls is designed so that you can drink with a straw more easily? Pull on the ring, twist it over the hole and put your straw in it. It will stay in the perfect place so you can enjoy your drink.
3. ALUMINIUM FOIL CUT ‘PROPERLY’
Most aluminium foil boxes have a grooved edge. Had you noticed? This edge is pushed inside and is used to hold to roll in the centre of the box. This way you don’t have to worry about it shooting out while you’re cutting it. Also, to make it easier to cut, use the box itself which stays open in the shape of a saw to make the task easier.
4. POPCORN WITHOUT KERNELS
If you don’t like finding corn when you have microwave popcorn, here is a tip. You just have to turn the closed packet upside down, as it comes out of the microwave, to let any kernels which haven’t popped fall out through the opening. Then open the packet completely, serve it in a bowl and enjoy your popcorn.
5. JUICE CARTONS WITHOUT SURPRISES
When you pick up a juice carton and put the straw in, does it always spill because the carton is very full? The answer to the problem is in the carton itself. All you have to do is unfold the side flaps of the carton to hold it while you drink from the straw.
6. HANDLES WITH SPOON RESTS
Many saucepan handles have a hole which, apart from to hang them up, is used to rest a spatula or spoon while you cook. In some models the handle itself is used to leave a spoon without having to resort to a plate on the worktop or a spoon rest.
