If we have decided we want to have fish in our house, before buying them we need to find out what they eat, if they are freshwater or saltwater fish, which species they are compatible with, and which they are not, and how they behave, to make sure that we will be able to look after them properly.

Once we have chosen the type of fish we want and the number of ‘tiddlers’ we are going to have, the vet will give us the guidelines to follow in looking after their health and hygiene.  Of course, food is also fundamental, so they live healthily.  In this sense, we shouldn’t just give them suitable and nutritious food, but it is also important to know how often and how much food we should give them.

Furthermore, within this plan we must consider their habitat.  Experts recommend that we should always choose the biggest fish tank we can, so we can reproduce the natural environment for the species we have chosen.  This way, our new pets can live in balance and harmony.

Keys to fish tank maintenance

  • Place:

We must avoid putting them close to sources of heat and/or direct sunlight, as well as other items that can alter the conditions of the water or cause stress to the fish.

  • Size:

A large space, more comfort, and more freedom of movement for the fish.

  • Water purification systems:

There are different types of filters depending on the size of the tank.  The filters are very important for good water maintenance.

  • Lighting:

The lighting for the fish tank will depend on whether they are freshwater or saltwater fish, and the number of plants we decide to put inside.

  • Installation:

Once the filters and lighting are in place, the sand, gravel or substrate base is put in.  Afterwards, the decorations and plants.

  • Water:

Fill the tank with water.  Treat it with anti-chlorine and water conditioner.  To prepare and maintain the water, it is recommended you follow the guidelines of a professional, since it is vitally important to always keep it clean and do partial water changes regularly.

  •  Arrival of the fish:

The fish should be introduced to the tank when it has been established for a week.  If we are going to have several fish, it is better to incorporate them gradually

  • Caring for the fish:

Health monitored by a vet, suitable food, similar habitat to their own, peace, and lots of love.  Ultimately, they wil be our life companions.
