Melon is grown in hot countries and has its origin in a plant from the cucurbits family, to which pumpkin, cucumber and watermelon also belong. It is a round or oval-shaped fruit, with a hard and slightly rough skin. The sweet, juicy and soft flesh can be white, yellow, cream, orange, salmon or greenish in colour, and is accompanied by seeds or pips that are removed easily.

Nowadays there are many varieties, classified according to their shape, flesh colour and skin, ripening period, etc. Melons are available at any time of year.

Shopping and preservation advice

When we go shopping, we should choose melons that are firm and without any marks. To preserve it, it's best to keep it in a cool and dry place. Once cut, you should eat it quickly so it doesn't lose its flavour and properties. It should be stored in the fridge.



The main varieties we can find include:

Cantaloupe or “French melon”

Round in shape, this melon is popular because of its flavour and aroma. Its skin is light green in colour with a characteristic webbing. Its flesh is yellowish in colour and it has quite a hard texture.

Galia

This is a round melon with thin skin and a soft flesh, with a green exterior and yellowish interior. Its flavour is sweet and very aromatic.

Honey dew

This variety is elongated and has a smooth light green skin and slightly yellow juicy flesh. This is a late ripening fruit.

Ogen or “Canary Islands melon”

This melon is one of the first of the season. It is small and round in shape, with a thin yellow skin and light green juicy flesh which tastes sweet.

Piel de sapo (toad skin)

This is an oval-shaped melon with a dark green skin, which is quite rough, and a white, smooth and very sweet flesh.
