Chronic dissatisfaction has a multifactorial origin, affecting all areas of the person’s life. It’s characterised by: physical tiredness, general discontent, feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness, misunderstanding oneself and others, perceptions of inadequacy or that something is missing in life, and negative thoughts.
Some issues contributing to chronic dissatisfaction include:
- Unrealistic expectations and goals.
- Self-demand and perfectionism.
- Comparing oneself with other people.
- Difficulties of healthy emotional ties and lack of social and family support.
- Mental health problems (anxiety, depression...).
How to avoid demanding too much of oneself?
Maintaining a high level of self-demand implies setting unrealistic standards for oneself, which can lead to chronic stress, anxiety and low self-esteem.
Tips for living in the present and valuing it
- Live in the present moment and reduce the need to live in perfect moments.
- Physical and emotional self-care to reduce stress. Take part in activities that contribute to your daily well-being.
- Spend time reflecting on and connecting with your needs. The acronym PROA (Think, Reflect, Observe and Act) can help you.
- Think and plan your goals without relying on the approval of others. Be your own best company, without putting obstacles in your way.
- Avoid overthinking problems. Distract yourself from whatever is bothering you mentally and act on short-term plans.
- Reduce the level of demand: what is important, apart from the results, is what you learn and the path forward, staying true to your values.
- Practice gratitude: focusing on the positive things you receive each day.
- Seek professional help: therapy will help you develop coping skills.
