What is the Matarraña comarca, and where is it?

Matarraña is an Aragonese comarca, located in the province of Teruel and at the crossroads between Teruel, Tarragona and Castellón. It’s made up of 18 villages, including Valderrobles, which is the administrative capital of the comarca. In 1983, it was recognised as a Cultural Heritage Asset.

Matarraña is surrounded by two rivers, the Matarraña, which gives its name to the area, and the Tastavins, which create a most bucolic and beautiful landscape.

What to see in the Matarraña comarca?

  • Valderrobles: entering through its stone bridge is like going back to medieval times. Discover stone buildings, cobbled streets, porticoes and a historic complex featuring a Mannerist town hall and the large palace that housed the Fonda Blanc.
  • Calaceite: it’s the second most populated town in the area. The Plaza Mayor with its characteristic doorways stands out. The town hall is in a Mannerist style, as is commonly found in most of the villages of Matarraña. The Church of the Assumption, with its magnificent façade of large Solomonic columns and stipes, is just a stone's throw away. This town was a refuge for writers such as Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa and Carlos Fuentes.
  • La Fresneda: the walk through the old town up to the ruins of the castle at the top is a real pleasure for the eyes. The masonry, the portals, the forged balconies and the parish church bear witness to the past economic grandeur of the village. From the highest point, you can see the olive groves typical of the area.
  • Beceite: gateway to the Parrizal area, a real jewel of nature surrounded by trails, rivers, turquoise water pools, waterfalls and natural slides, so both young and old can enjoy this wonderful environment.

Gastronomy in the Matarraña comarca: typical dishes

Aragon boasts an extensive and exquisite gastronomy. More specifically, in the Matarraña region, the protagonists are wines, olive oil, cold meats and pastries with local products. Pork products such as trotters, oven-roasted veal or rabbit stews are some of the most typical dishes. As good food producers in the area, there is a distinctive quality in all the products that can be found in local businesses, bars and restaurants. Among these, it’s worth mentioning Calanda peaches, honey with DO, wine, truffles, almonds and oil.
