Cakes are always popular, perhaps because they are one of those desserts that can be enjoyed on countless and varied occasions: during a leisurely weekend breakfast, on a relaxing holiday or for a special afternoon tea. This goes for the delicious chocolate and orange cake we are talking about today.

The orange season starts with autumn, which is precisely why chocolate and orange cake is at its best during this time of the year. The acidity that characterises oranges, together with the sweetness and bitterness of the dark chocolate, makes for a balanced, addictive and delicious cake that is impossible to resist.

Moreover, it’s easy to make a chocolate and orange cake. Once you have prepared it, it will keep for several days, so you can snack on a slice or two whenever you want. Let’s see how to make it.

Ingredients for the chocolate and orange cake

To prepare our chocolate and orange cake, we will need the following ingredients:

  • 200 g dark chocolate
  • 150 g biscuits (ideally Digestives)
  • 95 g butter
  • 200 ml whipping cream
  • 600 ml fresh orange juice
  • 400 g mascarpone
  • 60 g sugar
  • 10 sheets of gelatine

Chocolate and orange cake recipe: step by step

The recipe for chocolate and orange cake is quite simple, although you will need to respect the refrigeration times, which may extend the process a bit. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. The first thing to do is to line a 22 cm baking tin with baking paper.
  2. Next, let’s prepare the base. To do this, crush the biscuits with 50 g of chopped chocolate and mix them with melted butter. Once everything is prepared, spread it evenly in the mould, ensuring that it forms a uniform layer. Then, put it in the fridge to cool.
  3. Hydrate the gelatine. To do this, leave it in cold water for about 10 minutes.
  4. In a saucepan over low heat (meaning it shouldn’t reach a boil), heat 200 ml of orange juice with sugar, stirring until everything is well mixed.
  5. Next, blend the mascarpone cheese with 100 ml of orange juice. Add the remaining orange juice and blend again. Then, add the gelatine and grind to a fine paste.
  6. Pour the mixture over the biscuit base and ensure it is evenly spread using the back of a large spoon.
  7. Refrigerate for a minimum of 4 to 5 hours.
  8. Then, heat the cream. When it comes to the boil, remove the pan from the heat and add the 150 g of chopped chocolate and the butter. Stir well and pour it onto the cake.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours and... voilà! Now we have our delicious chocolate and orange cake.
