Mussels are a food with multiple health benefits. Not only are they an excellent source of iodine, but they also contain a large amount of vitamin B12 and a high supply of iron, making them especially recommended for people with anaemia. They are also low in calories, making them highly suitable for weight loss diets. Mussel pâté is an excellent way of consuming mussels in a different way without losing their valuable properties.

Mussel pâté is an appetizer that can be prepared in a flash and doesn’t require any great culinary techniques or cooking knowledge. What’s more, it can be made at any time of the year to surprise your guests and buy time before the main course.

There are several options for making healthy homemade pâté, such as this mussel pâté. All you need to do is choose your main ingredient and pair it with ingredients that add a creamy texture, like cheese triangles, cream cheese, liquid or whipped cream, or mayonnaise. Other alternatives include salmon pâté, aubergine or pepper spread, and chickpea hummus. But let’s stay focused on our mussel pâté and take a look at how to prepare it.

Ingredients for mussel pâté

To prepare our mussel pâté recipe, we will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cans of pickled mussels
  • 1 tin of canned mussels, uncooked
  • 3 cheese triangles
  • 6 crab sticks
  • 15 ml mayonnaise
  • parsley

How to make mussel pâté: step by step

Making mussel pâté is extremely easy–it won’t take more than 5 minutes! The key is to achieve the right texture by adjusting the ingredients as you blend them. Let’s go through it step by step.

First, drain the liquid from the natural mussels completely and remove some of the pickling brine, reserving a little in case you need to use it later. Next, place all the ingredients into a blender: the mussels, cheese triangles, crab sticks, and mayonnaise. If the mixture is too thick, you can add another cheese triangle or a little more mayonnaise. If it’s too runny, add a bit of the pickled mussel brine to balance it out.

And that’s it! Mussel pâté is incredibly easy to make and very tasty. For serving, you can present it in small bowls, attractive containers, or even in the mussel cans themselves to make it even more special. You can garnish with parsley or mint for a fresh touch. Finally, don’t forget to serve it with toast, bread, crackers, or breadsticks. Enjoy!
